Transforming an Unused Garden into a Beautiful Garden Retreat

Many gardens have space that simply isn’t being used.
Often it’s a stretch of lawn, a shed tucked into the corner, or an area that never quite becomes somewhere you want to sit and enjoy. The garden has potential, but it hasn’t yet been turned into a space that truly works for everyday life.
That was exactly the starting point for this project.
The Garden Before

When we first visited this garden, it was a simple, open lawn with a small shed and fencing around the perimeter. While the space was tidy and well maintained, it wasn’t being used to its full potential.
There was no comfortable seating area, no sheltered space to relax, and no defined focal point in the garden.
Our clients loved their garden but wanted somewhere they could escape to. A quiet place to work, relax, read, or simply step away from the main house for a while.
They wanted a space that felt calm, stylish and connected to the garden.
That’s where a Sussex Garden Retreat came in.
Designing the Garden Room
The goal was to transform an underused area of the garden into a space that felt like a natural extension of the home.
We designed and built a contemporary timber-clad garden room positioned to make the most of the available space while keeping the garden feeling open and balanced.
Key features of the design include:
• A modern timber-clad exterior that blends naturally with the garden
• Large glazed doors to maximise light and connection to the outside
• A timber deck that creates a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors
• Interior space designed for comfort, relaxation and flexible use
The deck plays an important role in making the garden room feel like part of the garden rather than a separate structure. It creates a welcoming outdoor seating area and encourages the space to be used throughout the warmer months.
Creating a Garden That Will Grow Into the Space

While the garden room creates the structure and focal point, the surrounding garden is what will bring the space fully to life.
Our design vision includes soft planting, seasonal flowers and greenery that will gradually fill out over the coming months. As the plants mature, the garden will feel more established and the garden room will become nestled naturally within the landscape.
The goal is a garden that feels relaxed, welcoming and alive with colour during spring and summer.
From Empty Lawn to Garden Retreat
What started as an unused section of lawn will soon become one of the most loved spaces in the garden.
A place to enjoy morning coffee.
A quiet room to work from home.
An evening retreat to relax in the garden.
A garden room doesn’t just add an extra building to a garden. It changes how the space is used and enjoyed.
